Acknowledgements

Acknowledgments are required for all theses and dissertations published by the University of Florida Graduate School. Acknowledgments may be as brief as desired, however. They must be written in complete sentences and must fulfill one paragraph’s length at minimum. Do not use direct address. For example, instead of “Thanks, Mom and Dad!,” you should say “I thank my parents.”

This section is only required if the document contains one or more objects. Objects are typically audio or video files, which cannot be embedded in the document; however, it refers to any content that is linked outside of the document. List of Abbreviations/Definitions

Appears after the List of Tables/Figures/Objects if applicable. This page is used to define symbols, acronyms, definitions and/or abbreviations used throughout the document. If included, you do not need to define the terms again in the body of the document, but if you decide to remove this section, you will need to define the terms at first mention (this is elaborated more below in the List of Abbreviations section).

Abstract

Abstracts must be FEWER than 350 words, counting enumerations, numerals, articles, and components of hyphenated compounds as 1 word each.

A lot more flexible in terms of formatting requirements and typically contains surveys, large tables, code, etc.

Main Text Pages

In general, all documents should have at least three chapters: an introduction, main body, and conclusion for example (they do not have to be titled this). Note that it is common for Creative Writing students to instead include a collection of poems or short stories.

This is required of all documents, with the exception of Creative Writing students since their work is usually original content.

Biographical Sketch

A biographical sketch is required of all candidates. The biographical sketch should be in a third-person narrative form. It typically includes the educational background of the candidate.
